Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail, 1700-1915 celebrates the museum’s groundbreaking acquisition of a major collection of European men’s, women’s, and children’s garments and accessories. The exhibition tells the story of fashion’s aesthetic and technical development from the Age of Enlightenment to World War I. It examines sweeping changes in fashionable dress spanning a period of over two hundred years, and evolutions in luxurious textiles, exacting tailoring techniques, and lush trimmings. Highlights include an eighteenth-century man’s vest intricately embroidered with powerful symbolic messages relevant to the French Revolution; an evening mantle with silk embroidery, glass beads, and ostrich feathers designed by French couturier Émile Pingat (active 1860-96); and spectacular three-piece suits and gowns worn at the royal courts of Europe. The exhibition is curated by Sharon S. Takeda, Senior Curator and department head, and Kaye D. Spilker, Curator, LACMA’s Costume and Textiles department. This exhibition was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It is absolutely stunning and the setting of touring crates is perfect.

SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS Men’s Club makes its dazzling début At long last, men are allowed to shine! Thanks to a trailblazing collaboration between SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS and sixteen top designers, all of them pillars of the classical couture tradition, menswear is in the grip of a glittering transformation. The brief: to create an outfit or an accessory incorporating SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS in a way that most eloquently expresses their artistic vision. From flights of fantasy to discreet elegance, what emerged was extraordinary. On 15 January, the project will be launched at a stunning evening event at Milan’s Palazzo Clerici. For a night it will become a men’s club showcasing these objets d’art from the world of haute couture. Designs will be brought to life by model-actors in a cinematic, multisensory experience that will astonish — and actively involve — guests. From Emporio Armani, Brioni and Zegna came tuxedos of astonishing luminosity; an artsy trompe l’oeil suit from Marni; sleek, almost architectural brogues from Ferragamo and slippers from Max Kibardin; a trademark witty fedora from Borsalino and a decadent robe from Piombo; plus chunky knits from Pringle of Scotland. There were additional fantastic contributions from Salvatore Ferragamo, Gianfranco Ferrè and Dior Homme; seasoned houses such as Bally and Hugo Boss; idiosyncratic tastemaker, Roberto Cavalli; up-and-coming Turkish talent, Umit Benan; and even a black-tie bicycle from innovative bike brand, Abici. There’s nothing understated in the colors, orange, green and royal blue; the stripes, decisively bold; and the patterns, from bananas to cherubs to monkeys. But there are also frills for a more feminine touch. Miuccia Prada’s skirts are tight-fitting and to the knee, but matched with looser jackets or tops, some echoing the men’s collection presented in the summer with V-necks that evoke doctor shirts. The outfits are paired with wedged sneakers high enough to give basketball court advantage.
