Also once you get measured, keep in mind your chest measurements. But use it as a guide–NOT gospel. Treat a suit like a tee– you may wear a small for one brand or style, but wear a medium or large for another. That being said, if you are having a hard time finding an athletic fit, go a size down in a fuller fit. You will usually find that it hugs your body better, and you will have to alter the pants less since you are working with a smaller suit (since it is matched with a smaller pant.)

I like your advice.. as usual. But I just think this one is missing some things. The most important thing on the fit of a jacket is the shoulder. If the shoulder does not fit properly, attempting to alter the jacket is a waste. The jacket will always look to big or too small- leaving it alone looks like you are wearing your father’s suit, and taking the waist in will only leave you with unsightly ‘linebacker’ shoulder pads. The shoulder should never be altered, and if a tailor offers.. run.

@clarenceandbilly What is your waist size?

do u have small collar shirts because i tend to buy designer brands and ive seen that the collars are very small. u should try the thin lapels on the suit too. it gives a sharper look. have you tried a video on cologne? maybe you can do something with that.

every time i get a blazer that fits through the waist and chest, my butt always sticks out the back creating a upside down V where the cloth is getting out of my way… my upper body is a 38/39, but my ass require me to get a 42 :/ what can I do about that?
September 2nd, 2010 at 12:48 am
@jfknightom Try a 39S or even a 38S. When I get officially measured in a store, I am a 43S, but the 39S works the best. Also, look for athletic cut. This should help and cut down on the alterations.

It sounds like you and me are actually very close in size, which makes me pay even more attention to what you’re saying. I generally get a 40S, but the waist is always too large and makes me look bulky and odd. I generally get things fitted but it seems like even altered they don’t get nearly enough. i was thinking maybe I was wrong and that was the style but with your fit test, they are still too big. How can I get the people altering to alter the jackets enough?

@JustifyJustin The pockets are just stitched closed. All you do is cut the stitch and pull out the string and you are ready

Hey Aaron, I like the idea you have regarding the pocket square – problem is, most suite jackets seem to have a ‘fake’ pocket these days. Any idea how to overcome this?

Yes! Separates are generally made to be worn as a suite or by themselves. But the one thing you need to know is that if you wear the jacket a few times and want to take it to the dry cleaners, make sure you are bringing th pants at the same time. If you over clean one of the items, they won’t match for long. Color and wear will become different.

I agree! Men have extremely limited options to pick up fashion advice like this, partly because of culture. But the need to look dashing is especially important, I think, because it sets someone apart from the rest of the crowd.

This should be required learning in high school classes. Thank you so much for sharing. I am telling all my boys about your youtube channel.

I’d like to know the answer to this as well… I guess wearing the pants would be okay, though.

Thanks Aaron – that was helpful.
QUESTION: Generally, can suit pants/jackets be worn as separates?

Over 1 inch shirt sleeve showing looks like your wearing your dads coat I recommend around 1/3 of an inch showing, 1/2 an inch for tuxedo and now shirt showing for more of a casual coat. Cuffing the fingers is a perfect gauge also the coat should cover you butt completely, if not its too short. Great video as usual.

The measurement does not always accurately reflect the appropriate size. Don’t be afraid to tell the sales person that you prefer a more athletic fit if you want a smaller size than what is being recommended. Aaron don’t forget about us tall guys. There are 5 sizes I carry at Men’s Wearhouse. Extra Short, Short, Regular, Long and Extral Long for 6″4 and above depending on torso length.
